On the occasion of the 80th birthday of Urgyen Sangharakshita (August 26 2005) the Dutch-Flemish sangha has given him a special present. In his 80th birthyear a tulip was named after Bhante. The tulip has the name 'Urgyen'.

Ter gelegenheid van de tachtigste verjaardag van Urgyen Sangharakshita (26 augustus 2005) heeft de Nederlands-Vlaamse sangha hem een bijzonder cadeau aangeboden. In zijn tachtigste geboortejaar is er officieel een tulp naar Banthe vernoemd met de naam 'Urgyen'.

'Urgyen' is one of the names of Sangharakshita, the founder of the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO). He himself has chosen the name for the tulip.
Urgyen is Tibetan for the Sanskrit word 'Uddiyana', the place in northwest India where Padmasambhava was born.
Sangharakshita was given the name 'Urgyen' by his Tibetan teacher Kachu Rimoche when receiving his Padmasambhava initiation.

De naam

'Urgyen' is één van de namen van Sangharakshita, de grondlegger van de Vrienden van de Westerse Boeddhisten Orde (VWBO). Hij heeft deze naam zelf aan de Urgyen tulp gegeven.
Urgyen is Tibetaans voor het Sanskriet 'Uddiyana', de plek in Noord West India waar Padmasambhava is geboren. Sangharakshita heeft de naam 'Urgyen' gekregen van zijn Tibetaanse leraar Kachu Rimpoche bij het ontvangen van de Padmasambhava initiatie.

Bhante once said that for him the tulip is the Western equivalent of the lotus. The lotus is a symbol of 'compassion'.
Sangharakshita likes tulips a lot and has thoroughly studied the history of the tulip. No-one else would have been more fit to give this present than the sangha of the Low Lands - the Low Lands where the tulip has grown famous.

Bhante heeft ooit gezegd dat hij de tulp het Westers equivalent van de lotus vindt. De lotus staat symbool voor 'mededogen en compassie'. Sangharakshita is een groot liefhebber van tulpen en heeft zich grondig in de geschiedenis van de tulp verdiept. Wie kon dus beter een dergelijk cadeau aanbieden dan de lage landen waar de tulp groot is geworden?

De Urgyentulp is een pioenachtige roze rode tulp.

The Urgyen tulip bulbs can be ordered now. By doing so, you are supporting a good cause (and buying marvellous flowers as well). Profit goes to the charity Metta Vihara which has just bought a place to establish a retreat centre for the Netherlands and Belgium. Metta Vihara is part of the FWBO (Friends of the Western Buddhist Order).

De campagne is opgestart door de stichting Metta Vihara welke onderdeel is van de VWBO (Vrienden van de Westerse Boeddhisten Orde) en retraites organiseert voor Nederland en Belgie.

Tulip bulbs need planting in autumn (october to december). They need frost to be able to blossom in spring.
Put them at 3 to 5 centimeters depth. The side of the bulb where the flower will come out, should be pointing upwards.
You can also grow them in pots but do make sure you put them outside during the winter months. Don't forget to water, especially in the beginning.

Over het planten van de bollen

Tulpen worden in het najaar (oktober tot en met december) in de grond gezet. Ze hebben de vorst van de winter nodig om in het voorjaar tot bloei te komen. Zet ze op ongeveer 3 tot 5 centimeter in de grond met het puntje waar straks de bloem uitkomt naar boven. Diepte ongeveer 15 cm. Je kunt de bollen ook in een bloembak poten maar zorg ervoor dat ze gedurende de koude maanden buiten staan en vergeet dan niet af en toe water te geven, zeker in het begin om de wortel vrij te maken.
